Lost:  Small Business Website.Description:  Basic layout with banner/header, sidebar of links, and a few pages with descriptions of our products and services.  Not sure how many visitors we get like to think we got a lot.  Site was initially built as it seemed hip to be on the 'net and have a website.  Holds both sentimental value and hours of time and money spent in development.  Technically we didn't loose our site, but we realized it can't be found thus please contact us at 212-555-8844 if you find it.Does this describe your site?  While it's standard business protocol to have a website these days, it's more than likely wasted money if your site does nothing to generate attention for your business.  Not every productive website has to sell something that translates to direct revenue.  Your site, at a minimum, should project an image that your an authority at what you do.80.5 Million active dot com registrations.- Linux Journal, August 2009Out of 80.5M .com websites which one is yours.  And if you're a non-profit you have 12.2M competitors.  Even if 10% are domestic, and 10% of those are regional, and 5% of those are offering competing services or products... guess what?  You have 40,250 websites competing with you.  And those are conservative numbers!So when someone types in "bob's widgets" to Google are you #4 or somewhere amongst numbers 39,320 and 40,250?  If you can't even answer that question, it's a safe assumption you're at the end of that list.So how can you change this?  CONTENT, CONTENT, CONTENT.  I tell you this without hesitation as this is a long ago revealed secret.  The Web has become so complex we all rely on search engines to give us bearing when searching, and the heart of their ranking systems is based on your website's content, relevance, AND currency.  Yes, if your site hasn't been updated in the past month then don't expect it to be found.  If that sounds ridiculous then you're far out of the game.  Imagine a newspaper that prints the same headline everyday of the week.  How many times would your buy that paper?Answers.  You want answers.  First off, your pupils should not be shaped like dollar signs.  Keeping a website current is no longer a difficult task.  With the advent of blogging this has become simple.  And an extension of blogging is Content Management Systems (CMS).  While Web Designers are not obsolete, they are not necessary for the daily-monthly updates of your site.  If fact if you're looking to have some maintain your Small Business Website, you aimed in the wrong direction.  YOU should be publishing articles as you own the business and you're the one who's an authority on your products or services and that's what you want to represent to would-be web searchers.At minimum setup a blog on your site that's updated no less than monthly.  But even with monthly updates expect to be lost in the search results.  Weelkly to daily updates will escalate your presence and authority in your field.  Follow these simple "secrets" and you'll find your website all on your own.
